Bill has some thirty five years of hands-on experience in research, development and applications of coatings for gas turbine engines. He joined Pratt & Whitney Aircraft in 1961 and directed oxidation, hot corrosion, and coating research in the Advanced Materials R&D Lab. In 1971 Bill became Assistant Manager of the P&W Materials Engineering and Research Labs, directing all research, development, and applications of coatings for P&W gas turbines. In 1981 Bill joined and became Vice President Technology of a small company which supplied coatings to the gas turbine industry. He formally retired in 1991 but has remained active as a consultant, specializing in high temperature corrosion and turbine airfoil coatings.

Bill received the degree of B.Sc. in Honors Chemistry and M.Sc. in Chemistry from the University of Alberta in 1949 and 1951 respectively, and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Princeton University in 1954. He has authored or co-authored twenty-eight publications and seven patents in the field of high temperature coating and superalloys. He is a twenty-five year member of ASM International and also belongs to The American Association for the Advancement of Science.
